My mother early on taught us to respect all animals, and I mean all animals – not just cats and dogs but rats and snakes and spiders and fish and wildlife, so I really grew up believing they are just like us and just as deserving of consideration. Joanna Lumley
When we first arrived in Jersey, I was so excited to see all the wildlife in our garden…then I realized that these hoof rats eat anything that looks vaguely edible, but especially all the beautiful buds that are just about to explode in flowers, and all the tender new shoots….but, as my mother did teach us to respect all creatures, I now make Riley bark loudly and fiercely. Yet still, this doesn’t seem to make too much difference. They are completely indifferent, and just merrily carry on munching! Oh well, deer-resistant plants it is!
